For a whole year, she did not look at her reflection. But when, on December the 31st, she removed the sheets which had covered the bathroom cabinet, the full-length mirror in her bedroom, and the gilt-framed monstrosity in the hall, she was disappointed to find that she had not grown any kinder towards herself. On the contrary: she now noticed for the first time that she had her father’s weak chin and her uncle’s terrifying eyebrows.
